What is Duragesic?

Duragesic is a trasndemal (skin patch) Fentanyl.  Fentanyl is commonly used to treat sudden episodes of pain that occur in cancer patients who are taking regularly scheduled doses of another opiate pain medication, and who are used to the effects of narcotic pain medications. Fentanyl is in a class of medications called narcotic (opiate) analgesics. It works by altering the way the brain and nervous system respond to pain.
Due to Fentanyl's effects lasting for only a very short time, regular users may become addicted very quickly. Additionally, fentanyl may much more potent than street Heroin, and tends to produce significantly worse respiratory depression, making it more dangerous than Heroin to it's users. Fentanyl is most commonly ingested orally, but like Heroin, can also be smoked, snorted or injected. Fentanyl is sometimes sold as Heroin, often leading to overdoses. Many Fentanyl overdoses are initially classified as Heroin overdoses.

Overview:

Fentanyl is a narcotic opioid pain medicine.  Fentanyl skin patches are used to relieve moderate to severe pain that is expected to last for some time, that does not go away, and that cannot be treated with other pain medications. Fentanyl skin patches are only used to treat people who are tolerant (used to the effects of the medication) to narcotic pain medications because they have taken this type of medication for at least 1 week. Fentanyl is in a class of medications called opiate (narcotic) analgesics. It works by changing the way the brain and nervous system respond to pain.
