Xanax AddictionWhat is Xanax and it's Effects?

Alprazolam (trade name Xanax, among others) is a potent short-acting drug of the benzodiazepine class. It is primarily used to treat moderate to severe anxiety disorders (e.g., social anxiety disorder) and panic attacks, and is used as an adjunctive treatment for anxiety associated with moderate depression.

It is available in an instant release and an extended-release (Xanax XR) preparation, both of which are available under several generic names. Alprazolam possesses anxiolytic, sedative, hypnotic, anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant properties.

 

Overview:

Mild benzodiazepine (Alprazolam). Tablets are available from 0.25 to 2 milligrams in strength. Assists with anxiety and sleeping disorders. Due to its short half-life (3 hours) it is one of the more addictive benzos. Addicts can consume up to 14 mg per day. Withdrawal effects include psychosis and epileptic-type seizures.

 

Appearance:
Elongated white pills, can be oval shaped (see picture)

Short - Term Effects

  • Analgesia-numbness
  • Sedation
  • Euphoria
  • Feelings of relaxation
  • Respiratory depression
  • Constipation
  • Papillary constriction
  • Cough suppression

 

Long - Term Effects

  • Can produce severe respiratory depression
  • Skeletal muscle flaccidity
  • Reduction in blood pressure and heart rate
  • Coma
  • Respiratory arrest
