The drug threat throughout Alabama cities like Birmingham, Montgomery, Huntsville and Mobile is the widespread availability and abuse of illegal drugs arriving from outside the state, along with its homegrown marijuana and the increasing danger of local manufacture of methamphetamine and designer drugs.

Conventional drugs such as cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana comprise the bulk of drugs arriving in and shipped through neighborhoods of Mobile and Huntsville. Colombian, Mexican, and Caribbean Drug Trafficking Organizations (DTOs), regional DTOs, as well as local DTOs and casual or one-time traffickers are responsible for the transportation of these drugs.

Additionally, Mexican, Caribbean and regional DTOs have extensive distribution networks within the State of Alabama. Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs are also supplying methamphetamine on a very limited basis through their own distribution network within the state. Local production of methamphetamine is on the rise.

Methamphetamine has become the biggest drug threat in Alabama. Although marijuana continues to be the number one drug of choice, methamphetamine has surpassed cocaine in abuse across the state.

Due to the increased availability of drugs, many more Huntsville, Alabama teens are in trouble with addiction... "Anything you want, anytime you want, anywhere you want" says 16-year-old Stephanie Riddle

"You can't believe how easy it is to get anything, It's way too easy," said Eric Doxey, 18. "People talk about it like it's nothing."

These were two teens interviewed, they suggest that drugs and alcohol are easy to get in Huntsville, Alabama.

There are reports that some teens sell drugs out of their lockers, other sell it out of their cars.

"I am absolutely amazed at the exposure that teenagers have to drugs. It flabbergasts me," said Ray Wahl, who supervises juvenile courts for Huntsville, Alabama. "It's got to be a really strong-willed kid who really has a strong set of values to be able to withstand some of the stuff that's around him."

"The exposure of drugs and alcohol is impacting the Huntsville, Alabama legal system"

In 2004, the statewide number of delinquent referrals to juvenile court was about 35,000, Wahl says.

In 2008, that number dropped to about 33,000, following a downward trend that began in 2006.

But now that trend is reversing. About 34,000 Huntsville, Alabama young people were referred to the juvenile court system in 2009, Wahl says.

These numbers reflect the drug and alcohol problem Huntsville, Alabama is experiencing. One of the best ways to stop this problem is to get the person away from the scene, where they can relapse.

An option is to send the person to another state where they will be supervised. Solutions Recovery is here to help Huntsville, Alabama drug and alcohol residents with their drug and alcohol rehab treatment.

There is a direct correlation between referrals to juvenile court and the number of "at-risk" kids in the community. And today, there are a growing number of at-risk teenagers in Huntsville, Alabama.

About 26 percent of juvenile referrals are specifically for drug or alcohol charges, but that only tells half the story, Wahl says.

About 70 percent of the youngsters involved in the juvenile court system on a regular basis have a substance-abuse problem.
