Sitka, Alaska Drug and Alcohol Rehab
Across the board, for all ages, Alaska has one of the highest per capita alcohol consumption rates in the nation throughout towns like Juneau, Fairbanks, Anchorage, Wasilla, and Sitka.
The prevalence of alcohol and drug dependence and alcohol abuse, at 14%, is twice the national average of 7%. This is critical information in our efforts to reduce youth substance abuse because we know that alcoholism runs in families, and children of alcoholics are four times more likely than other children to become alcoholics.
The use of alcohol and other drugs among our states high-school aged students, while high, is very similar to the national statistics for youth substance abuse. Statistics collected through the 2003 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) provide an improved, although still grim, picture regarding the current pattern of alcohol use/abuse by Sitka, Alaskan youth.
75.1% of high school students have used alcohol at least once, down from 80.1% in 1995
38.7% had at least one drink of alcohol in the last 30 days, down from 47.5% in 1995
26.5% had a binge drinking episode, down from 31.3% drinking 5 or more drinks within a couple of hours and in the last 30 days.
Research shows that those youth who begin drinking alcohol by the age of 13 have a higher likelihood of becoming addicted to alcohol and lifelong difficulty with substance abuse. Again we see an improvement in the current pattern of alcohol use in the 2003 YRBS, with a decrease from 36.7% to 23.2% of youth under the age of 13 having used alcohol at least once.
In addition, a recent health survey shows that smoking among Sitka, Alaska’s high school students has fallen almost 50% in the past eight years. The 2003 YRBS showed high school teens who reported smoking once in the past month fell from 37% to 19% since the last survey in 1995.
Substance use and abuse has a profound impact on Sitka, Alaska’s youth. It contributes to injuries, school drop out rates, teen pregnancy, interpersonal violence, suicide attempts, depression, youth crime and many other social problems. The good news is that with the release of the full results from the 2003 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, we are beginning to see decreases in most of the youth behavior problems due primarily to the substance use and abuse rates declining.

The Rising Drug Problem in Sitka, Alaska
Due to the increased availability of drugs, many more Sitka, Alaska teens are in trouble with addiction... "Anything you want, anytime you want, anywhere you want" says 16-year-old Stephanie Riddle
"You can't believe how easy it is to get anything, It's way too easy," said Eric Doxey, 18. "People talk about it like it's nothing."
These were two teens interviewed, they suggest that drugs and alcohol are easy to get in Sitka, Alaska.
There are reports that some teens sell drugs out of their lockers, other sell it out of their cars.
"I am absolutely amazed at the exposure that teenagers have to drugs. It flabbergasts me," said Ray Wahl, who supervises juvenile courts for the state of Sitka, Alaska. "It's got to be a really strong-willed kid who really has a strong set of values to be able to withstand some of the stuff that's around him."
"The exposure of drugs and alcohol is impacting the Sitka, Alaska legal system"
In 2004, the statewide number of delinquent referrals to juvenile court was about 35,000, Wahl says.
In 2008, that number dropped to about 33,000, following a downward trend that began in 2006.
But now that trend is reversing. About 34,000 Sitka, Alaska young people were referred to the juvenile court system in 2009, Wahl says.
These numbers reflect the drug and alcohol problem Sitka, Alaska is experiencing. One of the best ways to stop this problem is to get the person away from the scene, where they can relapse.
An option is to send the person to another state where they will be supervised. Solutions Recovery is here to help Sitka, Alaska drug and alcohol residents with their drug and alcohol rehab treatment.
There is a direct correlation between referrals to juvenile court and the number of "at-risk" kids in the community. And today, there are a growing number of at-risk teenagers in Sitka, Alaska.
About 26 percent of juvenile referrals are specifically for drug or alcohol charges, but that only tells half the story, Wahl says.
About 70 percent of the youngsters involved in the juvenile court system on a regular basis have a substance-abuse problem.
