A recent nationwide survey ranks Colorado as one of the states with the most reported drug use.  Greater than 10 percent surveyed over the age of 12 admitted to drug use in the last 30 days, ranking Colorado at the top of the list, along with Alaska, Oregon, Washington D.C., Vermont, Massachusetts, Washington Montana, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.

Colorado substance abuse statistics show nearly 348,000 individuals are afflicted with a substance abuse problem, of which 126,000 have either been addicted to or abused drugs. Worse yet are the drug treatment statistics showing that between 119,000 and 334,000 patients didn't receive drug and alcohol rehabilitation treatment. The city of Denver has reported an increase in opiate-based prescription drug abuse.  Treatment admission for prescription drug abuse has increased in Denver and throughout Colorado in every year since 2000.

Methamphetamine is the most abused substance in Colorado, followed by marijuana, heroin and cocaine. In 2001, Colorado recorded the highest marijuana abuse numbers and the second highest alcohol abuse statistics.

Authorities arrested nearly 18,000 people on drug charges in 2008, according to crime statistics by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. About 1 in 4 arrests in the state were for drug violations, more than any criminal category, except larceny and property crimes.  Many of those crimes were committed to support an illegal drug habit.
